Past & Current Projects
Earthlings
Youth Development & Nature Conservation
Joslin, as a highly respected member of the community, is now a Director of the NPC. She does incredible work in youth development with ‘her’ Earthlings. Proudly, she is the current SANParks’ National Kudu Award’s Top Woman in Conservation Trophy holder.
Cleaning up
We have picked up 4,5 tons of litter in the community (3,5 tons in 2023 & 1 ton in 2024). As an on-going litter management initiative, we have built 1 x 6m & 2 x 3 m rubbish bin holders, with 6 or 7 to follow.
Thank you to our Sponsor: Glacier by Sanlan who donated R50 000 in both 2023 and 2024.
Partnerships
We have forged solid relationships on behalf of an all-inclusive Storms River Village of residents and businesses, with SAPS, the NPA (at an Eastern Cape Regional level), SANParks, SANParks Honorary Rangers, People and Parks, Natures Valley Trust, MTO, Dryland Event Management and Glacier by Sanlam.
Safer Schools
Awareness Campaigns with SAPS
Animal Rescue
STARS
STARS is driven by Estelle Hester. She continues to raise funds for the Storms River Animal Rescue Service. In 2023 she raised enough funds for the sterilization of 50 animals at a cost of R27 000.
Village Signage
Improving our Signage
Most of our street signs are also old, outdated, broken, made of wood, or not clearly legible anymore. We are in the process of updating, fixing, and adding new signage throughout the village. This includes street names, business names, a large information board, and a welcome sign.
Street lighting
Installing Solar Lights
We are adding some solar street lights to our village so that residents and visitors feel safer walking our streets after sundown and before sunrise.
Our plan is to install the lights as soon as we have the funding. The lights we want to install are motion sensor so that we can preserve our environment and limit our impact on wildlife. The lights operate at 30% brightness and goes up to 100% when motion is detected.
Safety at home
There are several ongoing initiatives relating to safety at home. This includes numerous WhatsApp groups, awareness campaigns, and working towards grater cooperation between residents, SAPS, and security companies.
By-law infringements
We are working with SAPS regarding several By-law infringements: Stray animals, dogs not on leashes, businesses operating on Koukamma Municipality land etc.
Clearing Trails
Ongoing Maintenance
Thanks to generous donations and commitment from our community we are fixing our Plaatbos trails and clearing the northern fynbos belt.
Rebranding Trails
We plan to rebrand all the trails with updated signage. The first was completed in September 2024.
Future Projects
Safe House
A place to stay during emergencies.
We plan to improve the ‘Safe House’ at the back of SAPS. We want to create a safe place for children and parents who need a place for a short term stay during emergencies.
If you would like to contribute or be a part of this project please get in touch with us.
Wheelchair friendly
Building a wheelchair friendly route (and community)
Thanks to Jimmy Wayland we are looking at how we can make our village more wheelchair friendly.
As a part of this venture we are building a wheelchair friendly nature route through the local Tsitsikamma indigenous forest that borders the village.
Improving our Trails
Ongoing Maintenance, Signage, Marketing etc.
There are several future initiatives planned.
